Über Jahrhundert war die Einstellung zum Wissen (zur Wissenschaft und zum Wissen...) zum Gegenstand leidenschaftlicher und manchmal fataler Fragen. So wird Vergil, der große Dichter mit dem universellen Wissen, zum Zauberer, während ein Gerücht besagt, dass Albert der Große, der große Gelehrte und Lehrer des heiligen Thomas von Aquin, noch zu seinen Lebzeiten die Urheberschaft einer Art Grimoire innehatte, das heute noch in zwei Formaten im Umlauf ist: der Große und der Kleine Albert.
Die scharfe Polarisierung zwischen klerikaler Kultur und empirischen Techniken wurde damals in Frage gestellt, da die theoretischen Spekulationen einiger Akademiker gelegentlich mit den Spezialisierungen der Analphabeten, Handwerker, Bauern und Frauen zusammenstießen.
From the twelfth century onwards, attitudes towards knowledge (science and knowledge...) became the focus of passionate and sometimes fatal questioning. Virgil, the great poet of universal knowledge, became a sorcerer, while rumour had it that Albert the Great, the great scholar and teacher of Saint Thomas Aquinas, was the father of a kind of grimoire, still in circulation today in two formats: the Great and the Little Albert.
The clear-cut polarisation separating clerical culture and empirical techniques was then being challenged, with the theoretical speculation of certain academics occasionally coming into conflict with the specialisations of illiterate people, craftsmen, peasants and women.
We are going to retrace this fascinating history, which tells of learned men, great concerns and, finally, the lack of means to distinguish the possible from the impossible, the natural from the supernatural and, finally, science from magic.
A partir du XIIe siècle, l’attitude face au savoir (à la science et la connaissance…) devient le siège d’interrogations passionnées et parfois fatales ; ainsi, Virgile, le grand poète au savoir universel tourne sorcier, tandis qu’une rumeur attribue à Albert le Grand, immense savant et maître de saint Thomas d’Aquin, de son vivant encore, la paternité d’une manière de grimoire, toujours en circulation aujourd’hui sous deux formats : le Grand et le Petit Albert.
C’est que la polarisation tranchée permettant de séparer culture cléricale et techniques empiriques connaît alors une remise en question, la spéculation théorique de certains universitaires venant occasionnellement se frotter aux spécialisations des illettrés, artisans, paysans, femmes.
Nous allons retracer cette histoire passionnante qui parle d’hommes savants, de grandes inquiétudes, enfin, du manque de moyens de distinguer le possible de l’impossible, le naturel du surnaturel, enfin, la science de la magie.
