L’occupation du Cambrésis à la période romaine
Résumé
Les prospections menées dans le Cambrésis couvrirent près de 4 000 ha. Elles permirent la critique des données antérieures et surtout d’appréhender l’occupation romaine de la région. La densité des sites paraît faible, environ un site tous les 100 ha, mais la localisation et la hiérarchie des sites confrontées aux données environnementales, révélent les facteurs déterminant les implantations : plus que la qualité des sols, assez bonne dans cette région, ce sont les facteurs anthropiques, routes et voies navigables, qui privilégient les établissements.
Roman Period Occupation of the Cambrai Region. Results of the Systematic Prospection Campaigns
The prospection operations carried out in the Cambrai region covered nearly 4,000 ha. They have enabled the development of a critical review of the previously available data on the incidence of sites and in particular provide an improved perspective on the Roman era occupation of the region. The density of the sites looks limited, about one site for every 100 ha, but the location and the hierarchy of the sites in relation with the environmental data highlight the factors playing a decisive role in the choice of settlement location : more than the quality of the soils (which are good across the region), it is the anthropic factors, roads and waterways, that determined the positioning of settlements.
