The Spectralization of Servants in _The Mysteries of Udolpho_

Résumé

This article re-reads the problematic of haunting in the Gothic romance, Radcliffe's in particular, to argue that not only does an "I mourn, therefore I am" come to replace the Cartesian clause (as Terry Castle shows) but also that the political and social dimension of this shift plays itself out most especially at the level of minor characters and of the servant class. The repercussions at the narratological level are important because they require a re-assessment of the novel's politics.
