From stater to stanza: money, monument and matrix in Saorstát Yeats

Résumé
An analysis of the the poems W. B. Yeats wrote during his presidency of the commission for the design of the saorstát coineage reveal a remarkable numismatic influence. In particular, the poems that use the octave stanza of the Italian quattrocento during this period combine a 'hammering' prosody with strongly medal-like imagery creating an almost ekphrastic effect which brings to mind the coins proposed by the monumental artist of fascist Italy, Publio Morbiducci, whose neoclassicism Yeats particularly admired.
L'analyse des poèmes de W. B. Yeats composés pendant sa présidence de la commission nationale pour la conception de la nouvelle monnaie irlandaise révèle une forte influence numismatique chez le sénateur-poète. En particulier, les poèmes employant l'octave (huitain) du quattrocento italien pendant cette période allie une prosodie « martelante » à une imagerie de médaillon -- un effet presque ekphrastique -- rappelant surtout les pièces de l'artiste-monumentaliste de l'Italie fasciste, Publio Morbiducci, dont le néo-classicisme était tant admiré par Yeats.
