Thin coatings for fire protection

Abstract : Thin coatings have attracted growing attention in the field of fire protection thnks to their high efficacity for very small thicknesses (from dozens of nanometers to a few micrometers). Polymer/clay nanocomposite coatings have been deposited on polyurethane foams, and submitted to a propane flame (116kW/m²). They provided exceptional heat protection. Their mechanism of action have been detailed to reach a better understanding of these systems.
