Thin coatings for fire protection

Résumé

Thin coatings have attracted growing attention in the field of fire protection thnks to their high efficacity for very small thicknesses (from dozens of nanometers to a few micrometers). Polymer/clay nanocomposite coatings have been deposited on polyurethane foams, and submitted to a propane flame (116kW/m²). They provided exceptional heat protection. Their mechanism of action have been detailed to reach a better understanding of these systems.
