La théâtralité de la scène et de l’écran : le rôle du décor dans la fiction historique à travers l’exemple du Chevalier de Maison-Rouge (1847-1914)

This article is a comparative study of the sets in the film and theater productions of the Chevalier de Maison-Rouge. This play was performed in theaters in 1847 at the Théâtre historique, then in 1869 and 1888 at the théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin before its screen adaptation by Albert Capellani for the SCAGL in 1914. The aim of this article is to question the so-called “theatricality” of the film production, analyzing the characteristics of the stage set and the film set. What does cinema bring to this play? To what extent does the screen adaptation follow the aesthetics of the theatrical production, or does it oppose it? Is the reference to the theater, both in the production and the reception process, linked only to the dramatic story, to the sharing of an imaginative vision, or to an aesthetic reality?
Ce texte propose une étude comparative des mises en scène théâtrales et cinématographique du décor du Chevalier de Maison-Rouge (porté à la scène en 1847 au Théâtre historique, puis en 1869 et 1888 au théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin ; et adapté pour l’écran en 1914 par Albert Capellani pour la SCAGL). Le but est de s’interroger sur la prétendue « théâtralité » de ce film en analysant les caractéristiques du décor au théâtre puis au cinéma. Quel va être l’apport du cinéma à ce drame ? Dans quelle mesure poursuit-il l’esthétique théâtrale ou s’y oppose-t-il ? La référence au théâtre, dans le processus de fabrication comme de réception, relève-t-elle uniquement de l’intrigue romanesque, du partage d’un imaginaire, d’une réalité esthétique ?
