Classification of Receivers in Large Multicast Groups using Distributed Clustering

Kavé Salamatian

Abstract

In this pap er, we describ e and evaluate a mecha- nism for ltering RTCP receiver rep orts sent from receivers to the whole session. In large multi- cast groups, such feedbacks could induce network congestion, receivers overload and feedback delay. The prop osed ltering mechanism provides a clas- sication of receivers according to a predened similarity measure (e.g. packet loss rate observed or TCP-friend ly bandwidth share). This mecha- nism could b e used for example by layered trans- mission schemes in which co ders adapt dynami- cally the numb er and the rate of layers according to clusters of receivers.
