Symbolic or Monetary Exchange: Money, Hospitality and the Home in Edith Wharton's _The House of Mirth_

Résumé

In _The House of Mirth_, economic and monetary language is omnipresent and pervades all the levels of the text. This paper focuses on four levels, the first three of which are diegetic (the theme of hospitality, metaphor as money, the metaphor of currents), whereas the fourth might be called textual (the function of the signifier), although these levels inter-related, obviously.
