Faire les marchés : commerçant-e-s à La Paz et à Roubaix

Confronting two ethnographic enquiries on markets in La Paz on the one hand and in Roubaix on the other hand illustrates how gendered social relations fit in a complex structure of ethnic, professional and gender identifications, taking age and level of instruction into account. At La Paz, markets are held almost exclusively by migrant, often illiterate women that are in charge of the family budget; masculinization of street commerce in the 1980s met with women’s will to preserve their quasi monopoly. In Roubaix, the markets are held by a vast majority of men of North African origin that are excluded from the salaried labor market. Women are a small minority, they are unqualified and most often the only one in charge of the family budget. In both cases, the market turns out to be a non-wage type of work that emancipates women from men.
La confrontation de deux enquêtes ethnographiques sur les marchés menées l’une à La Paz, l’autre à Roubaix, illustre comment la question des rapports sociaux de sexe s’insère dans un ensemble complexe d’identifications ethniques, professionnelles et de genre qui prenne en compte la génération et le niveau d’instruction. À La Paz, les marchés sont occupés presque exclusivement par des femmes d’origine migrante souvent analphabètes et responsables du budget familial ; la masculinisation du commerce de rue à partir des années 1980 s’accompagne d’une volonté des femmes de préserver leur quasi-monopole. À Roubaix, on trouve une grande majorité d’hommes d’origine nord-africaine exclus du marché du travail salarié. Les femmes très minoritaires sont non diplômées et le plus souvent seules responsables du budget familial. Dans les deux cas, le marché se révèle être une forme de travail non salarié permettant l’émancipation des femmes vis-à-vis des hommes
