The “Women’s Collective against Illegal Immigration” in Thiaroye-sur-Mer is a useful illustration of current changes in women’s position on migration. Mothers had initially encouraged their sons to board the boats to Europe, but after the death of many migrants they are now trying to discourage this kind of family-based mobility. The Collective now has an anti-migration stance consistent with the agenda of the North, and has attracted the interest of the media and the development industry. This mobilization, in a context of extroversion, bears witness to a change in militant and social identities, a transformation in local power struggles, and local uses of the internationalization of a cause.
