Histoire d'objets extra-européens : collecte, appropriation, médiation

The Museum of Ethnography of Geneva (MEG) holds a collection of approximately 850 Australian objects collected between 1880 and 2017. It is the result of collections from travellers, purchases from reputable dealers and exchanges with Australian museums. Very often, the inventory registers give incomplete information about the place of provenance and the circumstances of acquisition of the objects, information which is fundamental today, especially when dealing with sensitive objects or human remains. In my article, I will present the provenance research on two painted skulls from Milingimbi (Australia, Central Arnhem Land), the collaboration with the community and the ongoing discussions with the descendants concerning their possible repatriation.
Le Musée d’ethnographie de Genève (MEG) conserve une collection d’environ 850 objets australiens récoltés entre 1880 et 2017. Elle est le résultat de collectes de voyageurs, d’achats auprès de marchands réputés et d’échanges avec des musées australiens. Très souvent, les registres d’inventaire donnent des indications lacunaires concernant le lieu de provenance et les circonstances d’acquisitions des objets, informations qui sont fondamentales aujourd’hui, en particulier lorsqu’il s’agit d’objets sensibles ou de restes humains. Dans mon article, je vais présenter la recherche sur la provenance de deux crânes peints de Milingimbi (Australie, Terre d’Arnhem centrale), la collaboration avec la communauté et les discussions en cours avec les descendants concernant leur éventuelle restitution.
