Depicting identity or emotion? Clairon vs. Dumesnil at the Salon of the Louvre

At the 1755 and 1759 Louvre Salons, portraits of two rival actresses were exhibited: that of Marie-Françoise Dumesnil as ‘Agrippina’ by Donat Nonotte, followed by that of Hippolyte Clairon as ‘Medea’ by Carle Van Loo. Through these two paintings, the study shows how the two painters chose to immortalise the theatrical expressiveness of their respective models. Using the testimonies and criticisms of the time, the article then compares the sensory experience of the spectators according to whether they observe the actors in a visual and sound spectacle in the theatre or whether they discover the painted representation of these same actors in the Louvre Salon. Finally, the author demonstrates that the two paintings relate to each other over a time interval of four years, illustrating the competition between the two actresses, but also between the two painters.
Aux Salons du Louvre de 1755 et de 1759 ont été exposés les portraits de deux actrices rivales : celui de Marie-Françoise Dumesnil en « Agrippine » par Donat Nonotte suivi par celui d’Hippolyte Clairon en « Médée » par Carle Van Loo. À travers ces deux tableaux, il s’agit d’étudier comment les deux peintres ont choisi d’immortaliser l’expressivité théâtrale de leur modèle respectif. En recourant aux témoignages et critiques de l’époque, l’article vise ensuite à comparer l’expérience sensorielle des spectateurs selon qu’ils observent les acteurs au sein d’un spectacle visuel et sonore au théâtre, ou bien qu’ils découvrent la représentation peinte de ces mêmes acteurs au Salon du Louvre. L’étude montre enfin que les deux œuvres se répondent à quatre ans d’intervalle en illustrant la concurrence entre les deux actrices, mais aussi celle entre les deux peintres.
