Benefits and risks of social- media use by people with intellectual disabilities: a systematic review

Résumé

People with intellectual disabilities are frequent Internet users who adopt digital tools for social and recreational purposes. However, the use of social-me- dia involves risks such as cyberbullying and expo- sure to inappropriate content. These risks generate concerns and a sense of responsibility for both the family of the person with intellectual disabilities and the professionals working with them. These concerns may lead to restrictions on use. At the same time, the Internet user's entourage is often aware of the social opportunities that digital tools provide, particularly to prevent loneliness. In order to synthesise and analyse the data in the scientific literature on the risks and benefits of social-media use by people with intellectual disabilities, we thus conducted a systematic review based on PRISMA guidelines. A search of databas- es enabled us to identify 652 abstracts of articles related to our topic. The selected studies had to be about the use of social-media or social Internet use by people with intellectual disabilities without asso- ciated Autism Spectrum Disorders. Selection criteria led us to include 16 studies out of the 652 published articles. A second judge was asked to evaluate the studies at several stages of the selection process. The themes covered by the selected studies include the use of social-media, risks, barriers, and online opportunities. The attitudes of family and friends are also discussed, highlighting the importance of these tools for the development of social relationships. It nevertheless emerged that social-media do not meet all the expectations of Internet users. The synthesis of the data shows a real interest in supporting the use of social-media and a motivation to develop new skills from Internet users with intellectual disabilities. Guidance for all involved appears necessary and will require further research on the impact of individual, social and emotional factors related to the use of social-media.
