In 1914, Albert Capellani started shooting a new version of Victor Hugo’s novel : Quatre-Vingt-Treize. During the period of Sacred Union, the film, which depicts a fratricidal war through the French Revolution, was censored. It was not until 1921 that it found its audience. However, this seven-year gap between its entry into production and its theatrical release weighs heavily on its critical reception. The movieled to several depreciative comments on pre-war French cinema, which in turn will infuse the first historiographical texts. Unlike these considerations, the investigative work carried out here tends to make this film a precise laboratory for observing the real or supposed changes in French cinema of this period, from a micro-historical perspective. At the crossroads of cultural history and aesthetic analysis, this book immerses us in the exploration of a pivotal period in the history of cinema.
En 1914 Albert Capellani entreprend le tournage d'une nouvelle adaptation de Victor Hugo sur les écrans : Quatre-vingt-treize. En période d'Union sacrée, le film, qui met en scène une guerre fratricide à travers la Révolution française, est censuré. Il faut attendre 1921 pour qu’il trouve son public. Or, cet écart de sept ans entre son entrée en production et sa sortie en salle pèse lourd sur sa réception critique. Le film donne lieu à de nombreux commentaires dépréciatifs sur le cinéma français d’avant-guerre, qui vont à leur tour infuser les premiers textes historiographiques. À rebours de ces considérations, le travail d’enquête mené ici tend à faire de ce film un laboratoire précis d’observation des mutations réelles ou supposées du cinéma français de cette période, dans une perspective micro-historique.
